About Mirago

Mirago is a search engine which enables users to view the Internet from a UK perspective and find information relevant to their geographic location.

The indexes are prepared by software 'robots' which continually scan the content of pages on UK websites and some major International sites with content relevant to the UK. Mirago's robots index all UK sites they know about on a varying basis. Some sites with frequently changing dynamic content are indexed on a daily basis, every two days, weekly or fortnightly. This ensures that contemporary content is included in the index soon after it appears on the Internet. Other content which is static or less topical is refreshed in the background less often.

Mirago search services are available on this site and through a network of Search Partners who are interested in providing their users with high quality search content based on a comprehensive UK web index.

Search Features

Mirago robot and indexing software is based entirely on technology developed in the UK and owned by Mirago plc, which is an independent UK company.

Regional Searching

Mirago indexes are 'aware' of the geographic area which many sites address. What this means in practice is that you can select a home town or region to conduct your search 'from'. When you do this, the results which match your search expression are re-ordered based on their proximity to your location.

Sector Specific Indexes

Mirago offers sector specific indexes in areas such as medicine. This provides 'authoritative' results from acknowledged medical sites which are uncluttered by uninformed opinion.

Filtering

Content Filters are permanently engaged on Mirago Zone, a special 'Family Friendly' area where adult and offensive content is excluded from search results. The main part of the site by default is unfiltered as the filters are conservative and sometimes exclude results on non-offensive topics which adults would expect to view. If you want to apply filtering to the main site, you can engage filters from the link on the homepage titled 'Preferences'. That setting will be 'remembered' by your browser on subsequent visits to Mirago. Alternatively you can bookmark Mirago Zone.

Normalisation

Mirago normalises search terms from plurals to singulars, verb tenses to roots and common abbreviations to full form. This technique provides the vast majority of users with more intuitive result sets. Search terms such as 'hants software companies' and 'hampshire software company' would provide equivalent results. Mirago is not case sensitive.

Featured Sites

Sometimes you will see special results titled 'Featured Sites'. They are listings which specifically highlight web sites that contain information highly relevant to your search expression. The fact that some of these sites pay to have these listings, means that they are specifically geared up to deliver products, services or information.
