What is Mirago?

Mirago is a Search Engine aimed specifically at UK users.

Mirago views the Internet from a UK perspective. In other words, it indexes all the UK sites it can find, as well as international sites which might be of interest to UK users, such as sites about celebrities, films or travel, general reference sites and international corporations.

Mirago features filtered searching to provide a safer web environment for children and families. There is a unique regional search which allows users to focus on a specific community. Its also possible to focus searches on specific sectors , such as Health, Education and Finance.

How does the Mirago robot behave?

The Mirago robot entirely refreshes its index in regular cycles to minimise the occurence of broken links within search results. The robot maintains a database of resources on each site together with details of when they were last modified. It therefore makes conditional requests of your server to prevent unnecessarily transferring documents which have not changed. In addition requests of each server are distributed over the update cycle to minimise demands on your bandwidth and hardware.

This load balancing of requests is controlled in line with other search engines so as not to hit your site too often. Small sites will be hit far less frequently. The exceptions to this rule are basically hosting services and multiple domain names pointing to one IP address.

What does the robot index?

Basically the Mirago robot indexes the body and the title of each document. We use anti-spamming algorithms and the software weights keywords and phrases according to perceived importance.

People often ask us for information of the way all this works, but as a matter of policy we do not disclose these details. Our objective is to present results in an order which reflects the unbiased relevance of a page.
